Sea Creature Rarely Seen Oarfish 18 ft Monster Deep Sea Weller Found in Catalina Island California. A marine science instructor snorkeling off the Southern California coast spotted something out of a fantasy novel: a silvery, 18-foot-long, serpent-like sea creature. Jasmine Santana of the Catalina Island Marine Institute needed more than 15 helpers to drag the giant animal with eyes the size of half dollars to shore on Sunday. The creature, identified as an oarfish, was already dead when Santana found it, but staffers at the institute are calling it the discovery of a lifetime. Oarfish are rarely seen, dead or alive. They are the longest bony fish species, topping at around 56 feet. It is believed that oarfish dive over 3000 feet deep, which leaves them largely unstudied.
